The A2P certification measures how long a lock or cylinder can resist a break-in attempt. Here's what the BP1, BP2, BP3 levels and star ratings mean, helping you choose the right protection for your home.
What does A2P certification measure?
A2P is an independent certification that tests the resistance of a lock or cylinder against forced entry. The higher the level, the longer the resistance time – and the more likely a burglar is to give up.
Levels for Locks
- — A2P BP1: approximately 5 minutes of resistance – basic protection
- — A2P BP2: approximately 10 minutes – a good compromise for most homes
- — A2P BP3: approximately 15 minutes – high protection, ideal for villas and commercial properties
Stars for Cylinders
Cylinders are rated A2P 1, 2, or 3 stars, based on their resistance to picking, drilling, and pulling. A truly secure door combines both a certified lock AND a certified cylinder.
Which level for which property?
- — Upper-floor apartment: A2P BP1 to BP2 is often sufficient

Is the A2P standard mandatory?
No, but some theft insurance policies require it or offer reduced premiums if your door is equipped with an A2P certified lock. It's a recognized guarantee of security.
What's the difference between BP1, BP2, and BP3?
The difference is the resistance time to forced entry: approximately 5, 10, and 15 minutes respectively. The higher the level, the more likely a burglar is to give up.
Do I need both a certified lock AND a certified cylinder?
Ideally, yes. An A2P lock with a weak cylinder remains vulnerable. We assess your entire door system.
