RC2, RC3… these acronyms define a door's resistance to burglary according to the European standard EN 1627. Here's what they concretely mean and how to choose the right level of security for your home.
The EN 1627 Standard (RC Classes)
The EN 1627 standard classifies doors and windows from RC1 to RC6 based on the time and tools a burglar would need to use. For residential properties, the relevant levels are RC2 and RC3.
RC2 vs. RC3: The Difference
- — RC2: Resists an occasional burglar using simple tools (screwdriver, pliers, wedge). A good standard for an apartment or a villa with low exposure.
- — RC3: Resists a determined burglar equipped with a crowbar and a second screwdriver. Recommended for an isolated villa, a ground floor apartment, or an exposed area.
What About A2P Certification?
A2P is the French equivalent, primarily used for locks and cylinders (BP1, BP2, BP3). In Switzerland, it's common to combine an EN 1627 certified door block with a high-security cylinder featuring a property card for comprehensive protection.

Is RC2 sufficient for a villa?
Often yes for a villa in a housing estate. For an isolated house, an exposed ground floor, or after a burglary, RC3 is more reassuring. We evaluate your situation on-site.
Does certification also apply to installation?
Yes: a certified door that is poorly installed loses its security level. Wall fixing and adjustment are part of the performance — hence the importance of a professional installer.
Can RC3 be achieved by reinforcing an existing door?
Reinforcement significantly improves resistance but does not always equate to a certified RC3 door block. For certification, the complete door block is the reference solution.
